Katy  Schneider
Summer Salon : Select Gallery Artists

May  9th  -  May  23rd,  2008

"I always want to be revealing in my work." " My paintings are about light first and foremost, and how it reveals a subject."

Many may be familiar with Schneider's signature paintings of her surroundings often including domestic life. The intimacy that is felt regardless of whether she is painting a still life or interior domestic setting, is masterful in capturing a dramatic half-light, employing loose, almost impressionistic brushwork well-suited to her subject matter. Taking inspiration from her own world, Schneider has often depicted lively groupings filled with genuine warmth but without excessive sentiment: she paints herself, her children and husband, her neighbors, and the most recently, the dogs that surround and fill her life. Several of these paintings will also be available to view.

In 2004, Ms. Schneider was awarded the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship.  This is in addition to other prestigious awards including the 2002 Thomas B. Clark Prize at the National Academy of Design Museum, a 2000 Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant and the Blanche Coleman Award.  She holds a B.F.A. from Yale University, an M.F.A. from Indiana University, and has received fellowships from the New England Foundation for the Arts and the Skowhegan School of Painting.  She currently teaches at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts.
