"I am trying to hold/reflect the lost moment...at its
best the final statement conveys a distilled sensation of
time."
Ben Frank
Moss grounds his vibrant, abstract still lifes and lush
landscapes in experience, whilst working exclusively from
memory. His work is most often generated out of a distant
recollection of a physical setting that becomes a metaphor for
a personal truth. A
childhood spent on still rural Long Island, followed by a
college education in Washington State, and adult years in New
England, the
Mid-west and Northwest, have furnished Moss with a rich
palette of experiences from which to draw. In particular, the landscape
of the Northwest continues to hold Moss in its sway. It is here, that the artist returns every summer to focus
on his painting.
Ben Frank Moss' vivid oils speak to a desire to capture - yet not dilute
- the potent emotional, personal response to an encounter with
a site, object or event. Dynamic
passages of glowing color, his paintings balance spacious
tonal shapes and brush strokes almost three-dimensional in
their boldness. Explaining
his work, the artist remarks, "(My paintings) are built
out of an extended exposure to what is seen and felt, trying
to understand what lies behind the appearance of natural form. I work totally from memory,
with each piece developing on its own. The surprise of the finished
piece can recall a beach on Long Island Sound, a garden in the
San Juans or a well-traveled road in the Northwest." Ben
Frank Moss has gained a national reputation having exhibited
extensively throughout the U.S. for the past thirty years.
He has received numerous honors and awards including
membership to the National Academy of Design, the Ford
Foundation Research and Travel Grant and the Distinguished
Alumni Award at Boston University.
Moss is currently Professor of Studio Art at Dartmouth
College, New Hampshire.
