"Philadelphia painter Stanley Bielen...has taken on the historically resonant genre [of the still life] --in a sense, he has taken on Manet-- but he has acquitted himself admirably. He too, expresses the modest floral still life as a soft, almost liquid impression. Like Manet he has transformed the subject into a fresh vision." --Art Critic Edward J. Sozanski, The Philadelphia Inquirer Bielen's elegant oil paintings are steeped in quiet contemplation. An intimacy is felt regardless of whether he is handling a still life or a landscape. This painter is masterful in capturing dramatic half-light, while employing loose strokes of translucent color from his simple yet seductive palette. For Bielen, these current works are a dual focus on the manifestation of the process itself and his subject matter at hand. There is a tension often created by being and observer of the visual world while being thoroughly immersed in the material, simultaneously aware of the evolution of both. Bielen finds himself meditating on nature, his material and art historical references. Through this search, he discovers the endless possibilities of what his material can do for him.
Stanley Bielen is a graduate of Philadelphia's Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
His work is represented in collections that include Hirshorn Museum, CBS Television,
and Goldman Sachs. |
