Andrew Nixon
New Paintings

September  8th  -  October  13th,  2004

In recent years, Andrew Nixon has moved beyond the direct inspiration of Breton landscapes, the subject of his earlier work, to a more universal sense of nature.  His interest in how light informs space, and conveys a sense place, has attached itself to woodlands, water, and increasingly, clouds.

Nixon's oil on canvas and oil on paper landscapes are enveloped in the unique light and shadow that is characteristic of northern latitudes.  In the painting "Waterline", Nixon expresses his interest in ."...finding proportions in nature that are beautiful and resonant" by capturing a time of light at its greatest luminosity, balanced with a symmetry of form and shadow.  Nixon's brushy strokes in complimentary shades of green, blue, and golden yellow give an impression of depth to the worked surfaces of his paintings that convey the soft, dream-like quality of memory.

Andrew Nixon received his B.F.A. degree from Boston University's School of Visual Arts, and his M.F.A. degree from Indiana University's Hope School of Fine Arts.  Since 1992, Nixon has been a member of the Fine Arts Faculty of University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, where he teaches courses in drawing.  He has also taught as a member of Rhode Island School of Design's Summer Faculty as well as a member of the Fine Arts Faculty at the Pont-Aven School of Fine Art in Pont-Aven, France.  In 1997, Nixon was awarded a Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant to pursue landscape drawing.  His work has been exhibited in New England's New Bedford Art Museum and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art, as well as in galleries in New York, Chicago, and France.
